How to Ensure Wheel Loader Operation Safety

When you are working with heavy machinery you have to be extremely careful as even a small mistake could lead to the equipment’s life getting a lot shorter. Sometimes even the most experienced and skilled operators can do things. That lead to the equipment components’ wear and tear increase. So, if an experienced operator can make such mistakes. Then putting a fresh user behind the wheel would increase the risk dramatically.

So, it is really important that you train the person who will be operating the machinery. Especially when there is a new machine in the fleet the operator should be trained before he is made to use the equipment. Without proper knowledge about the machine and its functions, they may try to use loader like any other machine. This could result in serious damage because technology is changing so fast and operating machinery without proper knowledge about its functions could really damage the equipment. 

This is where the operator’s manual plays an important role. Studying the operator’s manual and getting basic training will ensure that you are up to date with the machine. Proper training also means that you will be able to get the work done more quickly and be more productive which your company will obviously benefit from. 

Common Problem Areas of Wheel Loaders

On a wheel loader, there are a few problem areas that need extra attention and care. Here are a few things that you need to look out for when working with a loader and a few tips to help you deal with them.

The Buckets

The most prominent feature of the loader is its bucket, it is also one of the most common wear areas on the machine. The front bucket and its plate as well as the front pins and teeth are all vulnerable. And may depreciate faster than the machine if not maintained properly. So, for instance, if you forget to grease the front pin it will wear down much sooner. This means it is necessary that you grease daily and follow the other service guidelines that are mentioned in the operator’s manual. 

You need to keep an eye on the bucket and see if there are any plates that have depreciated and need to be replaced. If you don’t replace damaged plates, they will start to tear up the bucket. If that ends up happening you will be paying a pretty penny to get the bucket replaced. You may even have to start looking for a new wheel loader for sale if the equipment is damaged too much. 

Another thing that has an impact on how quickly the bucket depreciates. Is the type that you have chosen for the machine. When you are selecting the bucket, you need to choose one that is appropriate for the job. And the material you will be handling. The bucket you select should be able to scoop the material easily. So, there is no unnecessary stress on the front pins and bushings of the attachments. 

You need to try to avoid doing anything that will put too much stress on the bucket. Such as running engine RPMS wide open or letting the machine hit the pile too hard.


In most loaders, all the brakes need friction to work, as that helps generate heat. Using the brakes too much can cause them to overheat. And wear down prematurely this can result in the brakes failing before their time. If the operator is not trained properly, he may end up going too fast. And using the break to make short and quick stops which can damage the breaks. Similarly, if Operators go heavy on the brakes when they’re working under pressure. Or unintentionally ride the brake paddles, they can damage it seriously.

If you want to make sure that your break life is extended you need to train your operators so that they know to slow down. Before applying the brakes so that the weight of the machine and load have time to settle.
